Congenital heart disease is still the leading cause of death from birth defects in the U.S. That’s why the team at MGHfC partners with DOCF to make sure every child who needs heart care gets it—no matter how complex the case.
Together, they provide care from fetal diagnosis all the way through adulthood, including surgery for moderate cases and, when needed, referrals to Boston Children’s for more complex procedures like transplants. The team also shares their expertise across the region and internationally, responding to any requests for help with congenital heart care.
Each surgery carries an unreimbursed cost of at least $5,000—often much more depending on the child’s condition and insurance. DOCF helps cover these costs for about 15 kids every year.

With early diagnosis and the right care, most children with congenital heart disease can live full lives. Those with severe conditions need surgery and specialized follow-up in the pediatric ICU. A dedicated team of cardiac specialists is there at every step—along with child life experts, social workers, and financial counselors to support the whole family.
From surgery to follow-up, these children often need care for life. MGHfC and DOCF are committed to being there, every step of the way.
