In the Dominican Republic, access to children’s health care—especially for heart conditions—is much needed. According to the World Health Organization, congenital heart anomalies are twice as common here as in neighboring countries, and are the second leading cause of death for children under five. Despite recent progress, the country still has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the region.
In response, the David Ortiz Children’s Fund partnered with CEDIMAT to create the only high-quality pediatric cardiac program in the country that’s accessible to families who can’t afford care. Thanks to this partnership, the hospital’s cardiovascular unit now has the advanced equipment and trained staff needed to perform complex surgeries—and just as importantly, to provide essential follow-up care.

Through this program, low-income families receive:
Free screenings and diagnosis during annual rural outreach trips
Common and complex cardiac surgeries performed by CEDIMAT’s team
Highly complex procedures performed by visiting U.S. medical teams, who also help train local staff
More than 80% of the children who need surgery at CEDIMAT require financial help. Government health insurance only covers up to 70% of the cost, leaving families—who often earn just $3,500 to $5,000 per year—facing impossible choices. With surgeries costing between $15,000 and $20,000, DOCF steps in to help, contributing up to $5,000 per child to cover essential medical supplies like oxygenators, valves, and blood products. CEDIMAT covers any remaining costs.
To date, DOCF has helped provide over 935 life-saving surgeries, and funded more than 1,150 total heart procedures—ensuring children get the care they need, regardless of their family’s ability to pay.
